AI Prompt Like a Pro: My Refinement Method

Published on 14 August 2025 at 08:00

If you've ever typed something into ChatGPT and thought, “That’s not what I meant at all”… you're not alone.

AI is powerful - but only if you’re clear about what you want.
And that comes down to one skill most people skip: refining the prompt.

In my work with clients, refining is the difference between “meh” results and magic.
So today, I’m giving you the exact method I use to fix prompts when the first version flops.

🚧 What Most People Do Wrong

They either:

  • Undershare: “Write me a caption” (with zero context)

  • Overshare: A massive wall of text with no clear ask

  • Or they stop after one bad result and assume AI doesn’t work

The solution? Refinement.
It’s not rewriting the whole thing - it’s knowing what to adjust.

🔄 My 3-Step Prompt Refinement Method

Here’s how I clean up messy prompts (for myself or clients):

1. Be Clear About the Output You Want
Do you want a caption? A list of content ideas? A script? A hook?

Instead of: “Help me with a post about my offer”
Try: “Write an Instagram caption that introduces my service to new followers using a story and call to action.”

2. Add the Tone and Audience
Your voice matters. AI won’t guess it - you have to tell it.

“Use a confident but friendly tone. I help new business owners who struggle with showing up online.”

3. Give a Second Chance with Feedback
When AI gives you a “meh” answer, don’t delete it. Refine it.

“Make it shorter. Add a question at the end. Use less jargon. Sound more like me.”

Think of it like a collaboration - not a vending machine.
