The biggest complaint people have about AI-written content is that it all sounds the same. Bland, generic, a bit robotic, and nothing like the person whose business it is meant to represent. This is why so many business owners try AI, feel underwhelmed, and give up on it.
The problem is not the AI. It is that most people never tell it how they actually sound. Out of the box, AI writes in a neutral, average voice, because that is the safest default. But you can train it to write like you, and once you do, it becomes a genuine time-saver that produces drafts sounding close enough to your voice that a quick edit finishes the job. Your voice and judgement still lead; the AI just gets much better at imitating your starting point.
Here is how to train AI to write in your actual voice.
Why AI Sounds Generic by Default
AI writes in a bland, average style because, without direction, it aims for the most neutral, widely acceptable output. It does not know your personality, your phrasing, or your quirks, so it defaults to a safe middle ground that sounds like everyone and no one.
This is why unedited AI content feels flat and impersonal. It is not that the AI cannot write like you; it is that it has no idea how you write until you show it. The fix is to give it enough information about your voice that it can imitate it. Once it understands your tone, your style, and the way you actually talk, its output shifts dramatically from generic to recognisably yours. Training it is simply the act of teaching it what you sound like.
AI is generic until you teach it your voice.
Step One: Work Out What Your Voice Actually Is
Before you can teach AI your voice, you need to understand it yourself. Most people have a distinct way of writing and speaking, but have never actually described it.
Look at your own writing, the posts and messages that felt most like you, and notice the patterns. Are your sentences short and punchy or longer and flowing? Are you warm, direct, funny, calm, straight-talking? Do you use certain phrases, avoid certain words, favour a particular rhythm? Write down a few clear descriptions of your voice and style. Understanding these characteristics is the foundation, because you cannot instruct AI to copy a voice you have not defined.
Define your voice before you try to teach it.
Step Two: Give AI Examples of Your Writing
The single most effective way to train AI in your voice is to show it examples. AI learns your style far better from seeing it than from being told about it.
Gather a few pieces of your own writing that sound genuinely like you, some posts, captions, or emails you are happy with. Paste them into the AI and ask it to study your tone, style, and phrasing, then write new content in that same voice. Real examples give the AI concrete patterns to imitate, which works far better than description alone. The more representative your examples, the closer the output will match how you actually write. Examples are the fastest route to a voice that sounds like you.
Show AI how you write, do not just describe it.
Step Three: Describe Your Voice in Clear Instructions
Alongside examples, give AI clear instructions about your voice. Combining description with examples gives it the best possible understanding of how to sound like you.
Tell it plainly how you want to sound. Specify your tone, your sentence style, words or phrases you like, and things to avoid. For instance, you might say you write in short, direct sentences, in a warm but no-nonsense tone, avoiding jargon and corporate language. Clear instructions like these guide the AI's output and reduce the editing you have to do. The more specifically you describe your voice, the more accurately the AI can match it. Vague instructions produce vague results.
Spell out exactly how you want to sound.
Step Four: Save a Reusable Voice Brief
Once you have worked out how to describe your voice and which examples work best, save it all in one place so you do not have to start from scratch every time. This turns voice training into a one-time setup.
Create a short voice brief containing your style description, your instructions, and a couple of your best writing examples. Keep it somewhere easy to copy. At the start of each AI session, paste it in, and the AI immediately knows how to write like you. This saves enormous time and keeps your voice consistent across everything AI produces for you. Set it up once, and every future session starts with the AI already primed to sound like you.
Save your voice brief once, reuse it every time.
Step Five: Refine It Through Feedback
Training AI in your voice is not a one-shot task; it improves through feedback. Each time the output is not quite right, telling the AI why sharpens its understanding for next time.
When the AI produces something that does not sound like you, do not just fix it silently. Tell it what was off, too formal, wrong phrasing, not punchy enough, and ask it to adjust. This feedback teaches it to get closer to your voice, and you can fold what you learn back into your saved voice brief. Over time, this back-and-forth trains the AI to match you more and more accurately, until its drafts need only light editing. Refinement is what takes it from close to genuinely convincing.
Give feedback, and the voice gets sharper over time.
Step Six: Always Do the Final Edit Yourself
However well you train AI, the final edit should always be yours. This is what guarantees the content is authentically you and keeps your judgement in control.
Read every piece and make the final tweaks that only you can, adding a personal touch, checking it truly sounds like you, and ensuring it says what you actually mean. Well-trained AI gets you most of the way there, which is where the time saving comes from, but your final pass is what makes it genuinely yours and trustworthy. AI produces the draft in your voice; you give it the finishing touch that confirms it. That final human edit is not optional.

Advanced AI Prompt You Can Use
Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT or Claude to train it in your voice.
"I want to train you to write in my actual voice so your drafts sound like me. Here is my context:
Business type: (e.g. coach, photographer, consultant, product seller).
How I would describe my voice and style: (e.g. short direct sentences, warm but no-nonsense, a bit of dry humour).
Words or phrases I like to use: (list any).
Words, tone, or styles I want to avoid: (e.g. corporate jargon, overly formal language).
Here are two or three examples of my own writing that sound like me: (paste examples of your posts, captions, or emails).
Please help me by:
- Studying my examples and describing the key features of my voice as you see them
- Writing a short piece of content in my voice on a topic I give you, matching my tone, style, and phrasing
- Telling me what would help you match my voice even more accurately
- Summarising my voice into a short brief I can reuse at the start of future sessions
After you write, I will give you feedback so you can get even closer to how I actually sound. Aim to imitate my real voice, not a generic version of it."
AI does not have to sound generic. It sounds that way only because most people never teach it otherwise. Define your voice, show it examples, give it clear instructions, save a reusable brief, refine it through feedback, and always do the final edit yourself.
Do that, and AI becomes a real time-saver that drafts in something close to your actual voice, leaving you to add the finishing touch that makes it unmistakably yours.
